NSRC president commends RRTs during COVID-19

Following is a message from Lil O'Neill, NSRC president:

The events leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic have been alarming. I am sure that most of us   never thought that we could be caring for patients with COVID-19. It has been overwhelming because of how the speed and intensity of this virus has effected the world. How many hospitals were prepared for the possible volume of negative pressure rooms needed, use of personal protective equipment daily, and having enough ventilators to use in the Intensive Care Units?

Unfortunately, we are seeing patients with COVID-19 going into respiratory failure quickly. Our role has become very vital in caring for COVID-19 patients. In times of crisis, we need to rely on our training and experience to help us navigate through this uncertain period.

Our role as respiratory therapists is important now more than ever. We are in the front lines in the COVID-19 fight, working with other healthcare professionals to help patients survive. Many of you will make sacrifices, work long hours, and remain committed to providing quality care in your facilities and communities.

I commend the great work that Nebraska’s respiratory therapists are doing to care for suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients. I recognize this is a very difficult time for all of us. Your personal and professional sacrifices do not go unnoticed. Please remember to take time to care for your love ones, and be attentive to your own self-care and safety. Thank you all for our hard work, patience and professionalism during the COVID-19 pandemic!
